Blash o God

Blash o God

The Buchanites were a utopian religious cult of the 18th century led by Elspeth Buchan who fetched up in Closeburn near Thornhill. She believed that she and her favourite preacher were central figures from the Book of Revelations and predicted the imminent end of the world.  In the meantime they indulged in communal ownership, free love and so on. They dwindled in number as each ‘end of days’ came and went until there was only one left, Anthony Innes, who lived in Crocketford with the mummified remains of Elspeth and who insisted that on his death he be buried on top of her so that when she flew to heaven he would too, as a passenger.
